Only a fraction of what I was

Left beyond anything I’ve ever known

Craving what was long the history

Hidden in reflections of my mind

To the point I could even tell

If I was breathing or not.

Within the sudden insurgency

The weight has been sanctified

Yet not completely purified

By all that was lost

Within a battle

Nobody remembers anymore.

Glasses lifted in celebration

Wine dancing all over the table

While all attempts at a peaceful reunion

Were flamboyantly cast aside in haste.

There was a time rivers ran red

The sky was a terrible green

Grass ceased to grow anywhere

Yet life continued to carry on

To this moment.

He whispered in my ear

“How many have you loved?’

Then turned to laugh at his friends

I whispered under my breath

“None but you.”
